Has anyone else noticed their iPhone battery draining much faster after installing an iOS update?
The phone seems to work normally, but the battery percentage drops significantly faster than before, even with light use. Does this usually settle down after a few days, or are there settings or background processes that should be checked?
Yes, increased battery drain for a short period after an iOS update can happen, especially after a larger update. The iPhone may still be doing background work such as indexing files and photos, updating apps, syncing iCloud data and completing other post-update tasks.
If the update was only installed recently, I would give it a day or two before assuming something is wrong.
In the meantime, go to Settings → Battery and look at the battery usage by app. This is probably the most useful place to start because it can show whether one particular app or background activity is responsible for an unusually large percentage of the battery use.
A few other things worth checking are:
- Background App Refresh — an app may be doing more work in the background than expected.
- Location Services — check whether an app is accessing location frequently.
- Screen activity and brightness — the Battery screen can help determine whether the drain is happening during active use or while the phone should be idle.
- Recently updated apps — sometimes the timing makes an iOS update look responsible when an app update is actually causing excessive background activity.
- Battery Health — under Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging, check the Maximum Capacity and whether iOS is showing any battery-related warning.
If the battery drain is still dramatically worse after several days, I'd restart the iPhone, make sure iOS and the installed apps are fully updated, and then use the Battery screen to identify what is consuming the power rather than immediately changing lots of settings.
One useful test is to note the battery percentage before going to sleep and check it again in the morning with the phone mostly unused. Heavy overnight drain can help distinguish a background-process problem from battery loss caused mainly by normal screen use.
If anyone is experiencing this after an update, mention the iPhone model, iOS version, Battery Health percentage, and roughly how much battery is being lost overnight. Those details would make it easier to tell whether the drain looks abnormal.
