Washing machine stops in the middle of the cycle

Has anyone else had a washing machine suddenly stop halfway through a wash cycle?

The machine starts normally, fills with water and begins washing, but then stops before completing the cycle. Sometimes there is still water left inside the drum.

What are the most common causes of this a clogged drain, unbalanced load, door or lid sensor, water supply problem, or an issue with the control board?

A washing machine stopping halfway through a cycle can have several causes, so one of the first things to notice is exactly where in the cycle it stops.

If it stops when it should drain, check whether water is still sitting inside the drum. A blocked drain hose, clogged pump filter, or failing drain pump can prevent some machines from continuing to the rinse or spin stage.

If it stops before spinning, an unbalanced load or a problem with the lid/door lock can also be responsible. Many washers won't continue if the control system doesn't detect that the door or lid is securely locked.

It's also worth trying a smaller load and disconnecting the washer from power for a few minutes before restarting it. If the problem repeatedly occurs at exactly the same point, that can help narrow down whether you're dealing with drainage, the door-lock system, a sensor, or the control board.

For anyone experiencing this, what part of the cycle does it stop at, and is there still water in the machine when it stops?
